Your foray into the Serbian market starts with Serbian subtitling services.

If you live in an Anglophone country, you may have a skewed view of how many people in the world speak English. Venturing outside predominantly English-speaking countries quickly reveals that English proficiency rates aren’t that high abroad—even in some European countries, like Serbia. While Serbia is considered to have “high English proficiency,” in practice, this doesn’t always entail the level of fluency necessary to enjoy your TV series, movie, game, documentary, online skit, or other lovingly crafted content.

If you truly want to reach the Serbian people with your work, you’ll have to translate your content into Serbian. To do so, you have the choice between Serbian subtitles and Serbian dubs, and you’ll have to judge which is more appropriate for your content—but subtitles are significantly cheaper and easier to implement. At TranscriptionServices.com, we’re passionate about broadening the scope of Serbian-language content, and our subtitling experts love bringing exciting new content to their fellow Serbian speakers. We deliver our Serbian subtitles in the SRT file format, the industry standard type, making them easy to implement into your project.

Adding Serbian subtitles to your content offers more benefits than you might realize.

Serbian is the national language of Serbia—that much is obvious. But what you might not have known is that Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin are all technically the same language—they’re different standardizations of Serbo-Croatian. Serbian is the biggest of the group, with around 12 million native speakers in Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, with minority communities in Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, North Macedonia, and Romania. And speakers of Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin will also be able to understand your Serbian subtitles, widening your new potential audience to around 19 million.

But Serbian subtitles go even further than that. With our handy SRT files of Serbian subtitles, you can reach the large hard-of-hearing community in Serbia and its neighbors, who largely can’t enjoy original content from Serbia if it doesn’t include closed captions. (Incidentally, we also offer closed captions—let us know if you prefer those to conventional subtitles.) Serbian subtitles are also useful to all the Serbian speakers who may need subtitles for other reasons, such as watching your video in public or in other situations where they can’t listen to the audio.

Serbian: one language, two writing systems

Serbian comes from the Slavic branch of the Indo–European language family, specifically fitting into the South Slavic grouping. It’s literally the same language as Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin, but it’s also closely related to Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Slovene. Serbian is unique in that both the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets are standardized and accepted in Serbia, with users freely choosing their preferred script.

Like other Slavic languages, Serbian is grammatically complex, with a wealth of inflectional possibilities causing headaches for Serbian learners. Serbian nouns come in three genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and seven cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative, instrumental, and locative), with adjectives and demonstratives also agreeing with the gender, case, and number of the applicable noun. Verbs are conjugated for the grammatical person of the subject, as well as the tense, mood, and voice. Slavic also follows the Slavic convention of aspectual verb pairs—in other words, verbs always have perfective (complete) and imperfective (incomplete) versions. With all these intricacies, Serbian is far from simple, and neither is the creation of Serbian subtitles—so it’s always best to work with professionals.
